2013 Nails Event Calendar -Just a little Late

2013 seems like its already been flying by.  ISSE Long Beach is already done and over with, and that kicked me into gear to create this year's Event Calendar that way I'd actually know what I could attent and not attend.  Please note that this calendar does not include EVERY class in the Nail Industry, just most of the big shows, anything posted by Nail Pro or Nails Magazine, and a few of my favorite Product Educators (Young Nails, ect).  Obviously Months are underlined, Events are in Bold followed by the dates, place, and a link if available. Hope this helps other people out!  Let me know if you have anything to add and I'll try to keep updating!

Young Nails E-filing Class

This past Sunday I had the opportunity to go to a Young Nail's class on how to properly use an e-file (drill).  Years ago e-filing was a pretty debated issue -mostly because you'd have uneducated nail techs doing things with an e-file that you should never do. Recently e-files have become pretty standard in most salons because of the fact that with education they've become safer to use and that they drastically cut down on techs getting carpal tunnel in their hands and wrists.  Huuuuuge plus there if you ask me.

The class ended up covering how to drill on both acrylic and gel nails (yes, there is a difference).  I'm not really going to go into that, I just wanted to give you guys a peak at the demo nails they did on me.  I was one of only 2 girls wearing gel nails, so I got to be the demo girl.  I was wearing my blue snowflake gels that I showed you a few posts ago, and she switched one nail out to be a pink and white nail, and another to have a purple glitter french tip.  Now let me tell you, there's nothing better than being a demo girl because you get a front row seat into how to do everything, and I pretty much fell in love with YN's gel line... which you'll see in an upcoming post because I bought it and have been playing around with it ever since!  Anyway, here's the pics from the class.  The first picture is my nails before the demo, and then the second and third pictures are the finished products that the Young Nails Mentor Heather did - which required drilling off all my pretty glitter and building a new nail from scratch.  Hope you like it!

Green Glitter French (gel)

Today I wanted to share with you the other half of what I was working on last blog post.  As you know, I've been practicing my Sculptured Gel French Nails so I figured why not Rockstar it?  So I did.  I used LE Pink builder for the nail plate and LE Spearmint glitter gel and LE Sugarcoated for the free edge of the nail.  I think it came out pretty good :)  Not bad for a beginner.  Not bad at all.  Anyway, there's not a whole heck of a lot to say about it, so i'll leave you to the pictures!  Hope you enjoy!

Sculptured French Gel Extensions

It's been quite a while since I've had any real time to practice doing nails.  So today, when my boyfriend needed time to study for his skydiving test and I was left to my own devices I decided to break out my nail gear.  I forgot how much STUFF I have :)  But that makes me seriously happy.  I decided that it was time to start trying to do sculptured french gels extensions.  Aka, the equivalent of doing Pink and White acrylics (on forms, not with tips).  I sort of tried to take pictures as I went, but it really didn't work out all that well.  I get so excited about DOING nails that I forget to photograph the process.  First though - let me show you my new toy.  Well, technically I've had it since December but haven't had time to use it.  Its a Nail Trainer by Young Nails (there's other brands but this just happened to be the one my local distributor carried so i snatched it up.)  It has removable nail tips and bendable fingers/arms that way its kind of like doing it on a person instead of a stiff mannequin hand.  The verdict?  I absolutely love it.  Best $100 I spent in the nail industry... well except for my glitters.  Whatever you know what I mean.

So I started off by putting a form on the nail and building out a very thin layer of clear gel to build my nail off of, and then cured it in my UV lamp.  Then I removed the form and put on my Pink Cover Gel using the reverse application method and of course cured it too.  This just makes it easier to get a nice smile line when you add your white gel.

Then I moved on to applying the White Builder Gel on the clear extension that I built earlier and cured it.  I then again added clear gel on top of the entire extension to make sure that the nail was curved and built up in the correct places, cured and then filed smooth into shape.  Last, I added a nice gel topcoat and cured for 2 minutes.  :)  Not too shabby for my 2nd try at Gel pink and whites.  I can't wait to get some more time to keep on practicing.  It'll be even better when I actually get my desk set up so that I don't have to sit on the floor while doing all of this!  Anyway that's it for today.  Hope you think the nail is as good as I do.  Practice makes perfect!!

The Clear Overlay

For those of us who want stronger nails but really don't necessarily want it to look like you've had your nails done - may I suggest a clear gel or acrylic overlay.  No polish, no white tip, no nothing - just your own nails with some product on top of it to keep it strong and in decent shape.  It leaves you with your own nails showing through with a little bit of a glossy finish to them :) This is honestly how I wear my nails most often because I just don't have time to do all the fancy nail art by myself on my own two hands (not to mention that I'm only semi-ambidextrous and that seriously limits what i can do!).  What do you think?

My Feature in Nail's Magazine!

Ahhh!  So its not every day that you get to see yourself in a reputable magazine.  I was geeked when they told me they wanted to feature me in their "My Other Life" section, but to see the actual feature is sooooo much more awesome!  I couldn't be happier.  So without further adieu here's a picture of the feature.  And if you want to actually read it, you can go see it on Nail Magazine's Website.

Dark Gelish French

Wow... Its already January 9, 2013.... when did that happen?  I've been crazy busy and I apologize for being MIA since Christmas.  I can't believe its been that long!  Right after Christmas I went on vacation with my wonderful boyfriend to Florida, and then after getting back to Pittsburgh I had to move into my new apartment right before getting shipped out to sea for work.... which was supposed to happen today - except I got some horrible news and am now heading back to Florida for the funeral of my best friend.  Which im sure is way more info than any of you happy nail people wanted or needed to know - but hey, I'm a pretty open person.  But anyway, now you know what has been going on with me lately and why I've been so quiet.

Today I have for you a Gelish manicure that I did quite a while ago on one of my good friends Kendra (not the friend i mentioned about FYI).  Kendra gave me free reign of her nails, but was pregnant at the time so I stayed away from doing acrylics or any real nail extensions and just stuck with a simple gel manicure.  The color used is a very very deep purple with sparkles built into the polish. I cant remember the name of the polish off the top of my head, but if you really want to know just send me a comment and i'll go figure it out.  On the ring fingers we painted the entire nail and then stamped a very cute paisley design in silver... which unfortunately did not show up super great in the pictures, but it is a nice detail in person.  :) And for my services she gave me a whale mug!  I can't think of any better payment than hanging out with friends and WHALES! :)  Until next time!
