Happy Halloween

This is possibly the most anti-climatic post in the world.  So I definitely apologize,  poor planning on my part.  Its Halloween, and the only Halloween themed post that I have left is my Halloween pedicure... which is insanely simple.  Not to mention, this picture is definitely horizontal on my computer, but it's uploading vertically.  LOL, it just seems to be that kind of day.  So here you go, the last orange and black post you'll see for a very very very long time I think.  Happy Halloween Everyone!

Featured Nail Tech: Victoria

Is it just me or does Russia breed amazing Nail Techs?

I have an absolutely amazing nail tech for you today.  I was perusing Nail Magazine's photo gallery when I came across Victoria, aka NailMonster.  Every once in a while you find an absolute gem, and she's certainly one of them.  So I went to her blog and asked if she minded if i did a feature blog on her and thankfully she said yes!  I don't have much info on her, just that her name is Victoria.  She's located in Moscow, and has been doing nails since 2007.  She has a blog, a nail magazine gallery, and a webpage.  Click those to go to any of her pages!  So here are some of her pictures.  Aren't they amazing?

Please remember that all pictures are Victoria's property, and to not use them for anything unless asking her first.  Isn't she great though?  She has some of the best pink and white's that I've seen.  Intricate details.  I'm not even sure what to say because its all so pretty!

Tom Holcomb Passes Away

The Nail Industry took a huge hit yesterday with the death of Tom Holcomb.  He was one of the top competitors for nails worldwide and also introduced techniques that we now consider standard, such as the sculpted half moon.  RIP Tom Holcomb, gone but not forgotten.

Halloween Half Moons take 2

Today post is a quick one.  This is just another take on the Halloween Half Moons manicure that I posted about a week ago.  All I did was add black tips in the first picture, and in the second I outlined the tip with silver.  I think I'm a fan of picture #1 though.  Not quite as busy.  What do you think?

Again, apologies for the poor pictures.  The light in my cabin is poor at best.  Over the month of November, I'm going to aim to stockpile posts and get good pictures, so that December's posts from the boat aren't quite so bad.  Feel free to send me suggestions of what you'd like to see done.  I have tons of tiny brush's at home, so there will be more hand-painted intricate artwork next time.  Bear with me while i try to juggle blogging offshore :)  Happy Halloween!  Stay safe out there!

Just fooling around

Just wanted to share with you a few designs that I did while fooling around on some down time due to bad weather.  I just did my four fingers, and didn't end up wearing any of them.  All of them were done with the few polishes that I have on board the ship and a pen.  As always, I'm wishing I had brought my brushes out to sea, but alas hindsight is 20/20.  The first picture just shows you how pretty the base colors are on their own.  Orly Androgynie and Sally Girl neon orange topped with an unknown orange glitter from OPI.  If my gel nails hadn't been grown out 2 weeks I would've sported just the plain colors for a bit!  Anyway, of the designs,  I think the black with gold dripping from the cuticle is my favorite.  I'm wishing I had done something a little different with the pumpkins mouth, but it's an easy design that anyone can do!  Guess that counts for something right?

Nothing amazing, but kinda fun right?  Hope everyone has their candy and costumes ready!

What I'm wearing for Halloween

As promised, here's what I'm wearing for Halloween.  Sorry guys, no fun ghosts or anything, just some simple orange and black.  Like I said, I'm only semi ambidextrous so what I wear is generally pretty simple.  I did do a fun orange starburst on my ring fingers though.  I painted the orange base-coat, let it dry and then taped off the starbust with scotch tape.  Paint over the whole thing with a coat of black polish and then pull up the tape.  Perfect starburst every time!  So this is what I'm wearing until the end of the trip.  Hope you like it as much as I do!

On another note, does anyone else think that OPI has really outdone themselves?  They just announced their spring 2012 collection and its gorgeous!   Here's an excerpt from their Facebook page and a photo of the colors!  Can't wait to get them :)

"Muppets, Nicki Minaj, and OPIs Spring 2012 collection, OH MY! This coming February your nails will get a taste of elegance with our feminine & floral collection, Holland! L to R: Gouda Gouda Two Shoes, Wooden Shoes Like to Know It, I Don't Give a Rotterdam, A Roll In The Hague, Petal Faster Suzi, Dutch Ya Just Love OPI, Thanks a WindMillion, Red Lights Ahead...Where?, Kiss Me On My Tulips, Vampsterdam, I Have a Herring Problem, & Did You Hear About Van Gogh?"

Welcome New Followers & China Glaze Halloween 2011

Alright, I'm going to deviate from my planned post for today.  Sorry if it's a little lame, I promise more nail art tomorrow.  Anyway, the reason for the deviation is that  I opened my email when I woke up and had a huge surprise.  Nessa from A Lot of Contests and Such posted my give-away on her page. So a HUGE thanks to her. And thank you to all her followers who took the time to check out my page :)  You guys are great, seriously!  So if you haven't looked at her blog, please do so.  Just click here and it'll take you right there!

I also wanted to give everyone a heads up that Starlight Radiance is having a give away.  Its not a nails-only giveaway, but there's definitely some cool stuff.  Stop on over and visit her by clicking here.

Finally, I wanted to just introduce myself to the new followers, in-case you don't feel like clicking on the "About Me" page.  I'm a Wildlife Biologist who worked her way through college as a Cosmetologist.  I've been licensed in nails since 2003 and licensed in hair since 2004.  Right now I work offshore on the oil rigs and seismic survey ships watching and acoustically monitoring for whales.  So yes... I speak whale :)  And I'm stuck out to sea half the year.  I've had a good run as a whale watcher, 3 1/2 years now, but being away from family and friends is hard.  So I started this blog to follow me as I start to switch back to cosmetology.  I'm still working offshore,  but the plan is to open up a salon within the next 2 or 3 years.  I know... that's a long time away!  Anyway, I'm just blogging about nails in the mean time to get myself back into the industry :)  I've missed it like crazy.  So apologies for my nail posts when I'm out to sea.  We have a bag weight limit so I only get to bring out several polishes.  Right now I have 3 polishes and 3 stripers with me.  Anyway, I get off the boat next week, so nail posts should get better!  I'm gonna try to store up some posts too while I'm home so that December is full of good posts while I'm at sea.  So I hope you enjoy my blog, and if you don't like one post, please keep checking back!  Some are definitely better than others! :)  Here's a picture of mornings on the Gulf of Mexico!

And now a really quick post, which Im sure most of you have already seen.  China Glaze's 2011 Halloween nailpolish.  "Haunting" consists of a glow in the dark polish called Ghoulish, a black crackle, two glitters in silver and gold, and then two nice dark colors, one reddish and one near black.  I don't own these yet, but I've seen some swatches on other blogs.  They definitely look pretty, so I'm hoping to pick up a set when I get home if they're not all sold out  *crosses fingers*  Hopefully I'm lucky.  Have you picked up this set?  :) Let me know what you think!

Come back tomorrow for more Halloween nail art :)  I'll be showing you what I'm wearing for the Holiday!

Ghosts and Ghouls

This is just a super quick post.  I did this nail before I came out to sea.  Its a neon pink background by
Sally Girl,  a black french tip, and some sparkles over all of it with a glitter stripe.  Then I stamped a ghost on top.  Nothing special, but Halloween appropriate without being black and orange, which i needed a break from.  Check back tomorrow for more Halloween Fun!

Halloween Half Moons

So it's creeping up to Halloween, so it's time to start posting the Halloween themed nails.  I did this manicure about 2 weeks ago while we were down for weather.  Ignore the ring finger, I definitely goofed it up since the ship was rocking so much.  The manicure still looks good though.  The first picture is just my sparkly orange base with black half moons painted on. There's no top coat which is why the black looked funny.  I knew i was going to add too it so I just didn't bother before snapping the photo.  But I think I'd wear this if the ring finger weren't so wacky and if it had a top coat.

The finished manicure is what I was going for.  All i did was add a silver stripe of glitter, but it makes a huge difference in my opinion.  Well, a top coat helps too, but you know what I mean.  So this was my uber easy Halloween manicure.  Nice and simple. (Sorry I didn't clean up the cuticles.  Boat life makes me lazy)
More Halloween fun tomorrow!  Hope you enjoy!
Less than 2 weeks left on board!  I can almost taste freedom!

OPI's Niki Manaj Collection

I'm jumping on the bandwagon.  OPI officially announced the shades of the Niki Minaj collection due to hit stores January 2012.  This collection completely reminds me of her.  I don't like her, because I don't normally like her kind of music... but it's damn catchy, so I always find myself singing along.  Same thing with collection, I hate that I love it.  *sigh*  It even has a shatter, which normally I hate shatters... but it's purple... and I LOVE purple. See what I mean?  Love to hate it. Here's the description straight from OPI's web page:

" Despite what you've seen online, we wanted to make sure you got accurate information from us. The Nicki Minaj collection consists of a deep shimmering purple Shatter called "Super Bass" and these five Nicki-inspired colors: "Metallic 4 Life", "Save Me", "Fly", "Did It On 'Em" and the bubble gum hue "Pink Friday"."

So enjoy!  And get your Niki Minaj OPI's in January! I know I will! Good use for your Christmas money :)
Check back tomorrow for the start of my Halloween madness.  All posts until the end of October will be Halloween themed starting tomorrow!

Original Pirate Pedi

I just wanted to share with you the Pedi that I had on during the beginning of this trip to sea.  Sorry for the pictures, the light in my cabin is absolutely horrible!  Anyway, its a simple Pedi with a champagne base color (by OPI but I can't remember the name at the moment), some black star-bursts, a black french tip lined with silver sparkles, some sparkles on top of the star-burst, and some dots just for fun.  Forgive the star-bursts, I painted them in 20 foot seas, with a faulty black striping brush, so they didn't turn out as nice as they normally do.  All in all, not a bad look!  Stay tuned from some Halloween Themed posts coming up!

Halloween Paisley

This is absolutely one of my favorite nail art designs that I've done.  As you know by now, I've always been a fan of French designs.  There's just something incredibly elegant.  So for all of you elegant nail addicts out here, this is the perfect Halloween look,  at least in my opinion.  A sparkly orange base-coat, black paisley stamped on, and then a black french tip hand painted on.  Finally a little gold sparkle along the smile line and there you have it!  I very sophisticated Halloween look.  Hope you like it!

Haunted House

Alright readers, this is going to be a quick post.  We're in the middle of a storm out here in the Gulf of Mexico and our internet is shoddy at best.  Here's a nail I did while I was at home.  Honestly I'm not a fan, but I guess its okay.  I was swatching China Glaze's 2010 Halloween colors, and then trying to add nail art to them.  This purple is so dark, that its hard to really do anything with it that will show up.  So I painted a black hill and added some glitter to it.  I stamped on a haunted house with a bundle monster stamping plate... though it turned out a bit crooked.  Maybe the crookedness makes it more like a haunted house.  Finally I painted an orange moon in with some polish.  Overall not a bad design, though I think next time I might switch up some of the colors.  Hope you enjoy!

Featured Nail Tech: Amanda Raybets

pssst... you!  check the side bar :) enter my give away to win some free polish!

Hello Readers!
I figured since I have this blog, maybe I'd use it to introduce you to some of my friends from the beauty industry.  I couldn't think of a better person to start with than Amanda Raybets!  I'm super excited!  She's essentially who I learned to do nails from :)  I can't say enough good things about here.  But enough of my ranting, I'm sure I'll rant more a little later.  Here's a short interview with Amanda and some examples of her work!

Name: Amanda Rae Raybets
Salon: A Finished Appearance
How long have you been doing nails?  17 years
Why did you get into nails?   I always bit my nails when I was little. When I was 14 my mother, who had a hair salon in our home, took me to her nail salon to get a full set of acrylic for my dinner dance.  I fell in love with nails right then and got my first job at the dairy queen so I could pay to keep them up!  Jeffrey Tuminella, my nail tech, mentored me and let me sit for countless hours to watch him and learn everything I could because my beauty school teacher had no clue how to do acrylics!  Then Jeffrey hired me when I was 15!  I got my nail license at 16 and worked for him for 15 years until my mother and I opened a salon and day spa 2 years ago!
Do you do nail art?  Yes I do all free hand nail art!
Favorite nail polish?  Creative nail and OPI
Do you read any nail blogs?  Not yet!  But I will be now!

Here is some of her work!  Remember:  October is Brest Cancer Awareness month!

Isn't she fantastic?  Like I said, I can not say enough good things about her!  I was actually hired by Jeffrey Tuminella also, and that's how I met Amanda.  I was just a happy little shampoo girl, working my first job in a salon.  One main perk about being in a salon is definitely that you get to have your hair and nails done!  Amanda put on my first ever set of acrylics, and just like her, I was in love!  Also like her, my beauty school (which I believe was actually Amanda's also) didn't teach nails, so I learned from her!  Funny how history repeats itself isn't it?  Anyway, I probably shouldn't choose favorites, but the girls from A Finished Appearance are the best!  By far my favorite place I ever worked :)  So if you're in or around Lower Burrell, PA: go to A Finished Appearance.  It's a full service salon and day spa, so its got all you're beauty needs under one roof + the most amazing ladies you'll ever meet.  Much love to Amanda and the girls at A Finished Appearance.
